It’s 1794 at the Cape of Good Hope. It’s the Age of Enlightenment. Trijn van de Caab, a young freed slave and wigmaker’s apprentice, travels with her adored French employer and teacher to a remote Dutch colonial slave estate where the Young Mistress of the house has lost her hair. As Trijn weaves a wig to hide a shameful secret, she watches the Dutch Master of Vogelzang building a strange spiral-shaped building in a grove beyond the farmhouse far from prying eyes. What lies within the spiral house will present Trijn with a terrible choice between her own dreams of freedom and everyone she loves, and an uncertain future.
